Protection of nature and landscape management

Various measures for the protection of rare, endangered or characteristic species of the region, for example the otter, the pearl mussel or bats and their biotopes, are taken in the Bavarian Forest Nature Park. The last remnants of natural and near natural areas can be secured through means of purchase. In addition, the cultural landscape, developed from and influenced by human activity through the centuries, can be supported by actions such as the maintenance of litter meadows and the planting of extensive orchards.

Opportunities are provided for recreation and activities

The Bavarian Forest Nature Park wishes to provide opportunities for recreation and other activities to local and tourists without making the landscape suffer. A large system of marked paths for walking, including signs with important infor-

mation, are available for people seeking recreation throughout the Nature Park.

Nature experience trails inform about ecological relationships and provide a new way to experience nature with all senses.

Environmental education and public relations

A prerequisite for the careful handling of nature is understanding. That is why en- vironmental education plays an increasingly important part in the work of the Nature Park.

Excursions and guided tours for tourists and school groups, as well as presentations covering different subjects, have therefore been introduced. They are very popular with both locals and tourists.

In addition, in the area of the Arber a Nature Park Ranger provides information and offers to look after groups on-site. Being the highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest, the Arber is a magnet for mass tourism and was therefore the first place to be granted an official ranger.
